“When Should I Replace My Sump Pump?”

Already have a sump pump?  Good.  Because we’d like to point out something about it you might not have considered before, i.e., it performs the exact opposite function of all your other plumbing.  You see, while all other plumbing fixtures and systems bring water to you, your sump pump’s job is to remove excess water from your basement and get it outdoors before it can cause any damage.

Of course, that’s pretty much where the dissimilarities end.  Because like the rest of your plumbing, your sump pump is a mechanical system with a lifespan of about 10 years.  Has that time already come for you?  Here are a few indicators telling you it might be time to replace it:

  • blogIts age. If you’re the proactive type, you might want to replace your sump pump before it can fail, and that would be once it reaches or nears the 10-year old mark.  Or, if it seems to be working “as good as new”, give us a call and we’ll be happy to check it out for you.
  • “Listen to the music.” Sump pumps have their own distinct humming/operating sound. Get used to the sound of yours so that if it changes its tune and starts sounding choppy or otherwise erratic, you’ll know that you probably at least have a repair issue on your hands.
  • Keep your eye on the water. If you notice water getting closer and closer to the top of the sump from one rain storm to the next, you have another clear warning sign of impending failure or a repair issues facing you.  Waiting to act until water overflows the pit is waiting too long.
