Why Am I Losing Water Pressure in My Shower?

blogYou know the scene: just about every morning you and the rest of your family make the mad dash to get ready for work and school. Of course, the place where everyone seems to collide is in the bathroom.

Finally, it’s your turn to take a shower and for at least a few precious minutes, school and work prep is someone else’s problem.  This is the ultimate morning “me” time, and you want it enjoy to the max, however brief the experience might be.

But wait a second – all of a sudden water pressure in the shower decreased by a lot while the temperature spiked way, way up.  “What’s up with that?”, you’re no doubt thinking.

Well, remember the family you were hoping to forget about during your shower?  Well, looks like one of them probably visited another bathroom (or even the same one) in your house and flushed the toilet, thus causing a sudden drop in your shower water pressure.  That can happen when the shower and toilet are tied to the same water supply line. That’s also the reason for the sudden rush of hot water; only the cold water supply is being redirected so that leaves you with only hot water for those few excruciating moments.

And since every good mystery deserves a solution, here’s one that usually works:  before the next morning shower and bathroom marathon comes along, turn the toilet water supply shutoff valve clockwise, but stop just before you turn it completely off. This will slow the rate at which the toilet tank refills, but it won’t affect the toilet’s flushing pressure.  Even better, it should eliminate the drop in water pressure in the shower, even if someone does flush the toilet at the same time.
