How to “Green” Clean Your Electronics in Clarksville & Howard County, MD

Cleaning a Flat screen with an antistatic clothAll-purpose cleaners are a great way to clean a variety of surfaces in your home. But when it comes to cleaning your computer, TV, and portable devices, their very delicate screens and components require a bit more care.

While household electronics often come with a hefty price tag, cleaning them doesn’t have to. Yes, you could just pick up a small bottle of electronics cleaner at $10 – $15 dollars a pop, but we know you have more important things to spend your money on. So here are a few tips for cleaning your electronics safely and effectively with things you may already have in your home

Touch Screen Devices

For touch screen devices like smartphones and tablets, all you need is a solution of equal parts distilled water and vinegar in a spray bottle. Spray a soft cloth like cotton or microfiber with the solution and gently wipe away fingerprints and smudges. You can also use a 50/50 mixture of distilled water and 70% rubbing alcohol, though some manufactures advice against alcohol-based cleaners.

LCD and Plasma TV

Flat screen TVs are more delicate than most other electronic devices. For regular dusting, simply turn the TV off – so you can see the dust and smudges – and gently wipe with a microfiber cloth. Avoid paper-based towels as they can scratch the surface of the TV. For stubborn fingerprints and gunk, spray the cloth with a 50/50 solution of distilled water and white vinegar then wipe. Never spray the screen directly as it can greatly damage your TV (and void your warranty).

Keyboard and Mouse

Start turning off and unplugging your laptop or computer keyboard. Blow dust out from in between the keys with compressed air, then clean the keys with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol. You can also use rubbing alcohol to clean your mouse. Again, avoid spraying anything directly on your keyboard or mouse.

Computer Screens

Spray a soft cotton or microfiber cloth with a mixture of equal parts distilled water and either white vinegar or rubbing alcohol, then gently wipe the screen clean.
