Separating Plumbing Facts from Fiction

There was a time when everyone believed that plunging your toilet will clear the blockage. Now people know better. In fact, plunging may cause further blockage by pressing the material further down.

While we’ve managed to overcome this, many plumbing misconceptions still persist. We’re not certain who initiated these myths, but today, we’re plumbing them to the ground! Here they are:

Lemons will freshen and clean the disposal

Several people suggest grinding lemons for cleaning purpose. While it’s true that lemons will make it smell cleaner and fresher, it will only be for a few minutes.

You know what else the fresh smelling citrus from the lemons and other citrusy fruits can do? Corrode. It will ruin the inner metal. Instead, use ice cubes; they will sharpen the blade as well as make it smell fresher. Add a pinch of salt to enhance ice’s scrubbing effect.

Chemical drain cleaners help with the clogs

These cleaners are caustic and corrosive. When they’re done eating the clog, they’ll start with the pipes! So the cleaners will damage the pipes they’re supposed to protect.

In case of a spill, these chemicals can also damage any surrounding area they touch. Instead, try vinegar and baking soda. If it doesn’t work, call our excellent plumbing services.

Plumbing tasks are easy enough to do by yourself

A plumbing task may look easy, but may be far more complex than what you may have imagined.

You have to be careful not to touch the wrong pipe or damage the surface of sinks, kitchen tops and faucets.

It is especially difficult if the plumbing has to be done near an electricity outlet, or involves an electric powered appliance. If you try to save costs by not calling a plumber, you run the risk of causing further damage.

You can put anything down the garbage disposal

Of course you can put anything down the disposal, but you’ll face the consequences of it too. Greasy material such as cheese will create a messy clog. Celery, potato skins and other stringy food can get caught in the blades which can lock the disposal.

Also keep away coffee, bones, egg shells, and bread products, to keep the disposal running.

Now that we have cleared some common plumbing misconceptions, here’s what you can do if you face a plumbing problem and don’t know what to do: Call us right away!
