How to Pull Off the Perfect Tag Sale in Herndon and Fairfax County

Take a drive through your neighborhood on any given weekend – especially mornings – and you’re sure to see some typical signs of spring. You know, things like sunny yellow daffodils, homeowners tending to their lawns and, of course, brightly colored signs enticing deal hunters to scavenging at local tag or yard sales.
If you’re one of the many hoping to make the best of your own such event, there are a few things you should know beforehand, including these 8 handy tips:
- Choose your items carefully. While there are buyers looking for all sorts of things at tag sales, it’s probably not the best time to sell higher end or more expensive belongings.
- See if you can get a few neighbors to join you. Tag sale hunters like to scope out neighborhoods with a lot of activity. And the more you have to show, the longer they’re likely to stick around and buy.
- Have your tag sale early in the day, starting by 8 or 9 in the morning.
- Advertise the event a week or so before holding it. Make sure you check with your town before posting signs on side streets and utility poles.
- Keep your pricing simple and relatively low. And remember: the main goal is to clear your house of items you no longer need – making a few bucks on them is a bonus.
- Organize items into like piles or batches, placing larger pieces closest to the street.
- Have a free section for things that you simply want gone.
- Figure out in advance what you’re going to do with what doesn’t sell, whether it’s a drop off at the Salvation Army, scheduling a bulk trash pick-up, etc.
So let’s say you have your tag sale and it not only goes off without a hitch, but you rake in a few more bucks than you even hoped for. Now what? Well, since your primary goal was to rid your home of clutter, how about treating yourself to some kind of home makeover.
