Cold Weather Survival Tips in Arlington & Arlington County

blogOf all four seasons, the one most of us hate to see come to an end is fall, mostly for what’s to follow.

Well, “what’s to follow” is right around the corner and, like it or not, it’s way better to be prepared than sorry. So from your local plumbing professionals at Your 1 Plumber, here are some cold weather survival tips that will serve you well in the coming months.

Hit the Road

  • Leave your windshield wipers facing up and place old socks on them to keep them from freezing.
  • Keep a small carpet remnant or a bag of kitty litter in your trunk. Either can be used to provide a little traction should you get stuck in the snow or ice.
  • Keep your car windows from freezing by spraying them with a mixture of 3 parts vinegar to 1 part water.
  • Make sure your tires are winter ready by checking the tread with a penny. If Lincoln’s head shows, it’s time for new or snow tires!

Stay Warm

  • Warm up cold sheets by filling a heat-safe water bottle with hot water and placing it under the covers before getting in.
  • Make a reusable hand warmer out of fleece and rice. Before heading outside, pop them in the microwave for 30 seconds and keep them in your pockets.
  • Add wool insoles to your shoes to keep your feet toasty warm.
  • Run a ceiling fan in reverse to push the warm air that gets trapped at the ceiling down to the center of the room.

Health and Beauty

  • Keep your shower short and sweet to prevent your skin from drying out.
  • Wash your face with oil instead of harsh cleansers that can leave your skin feeling itchy and dry.
  • Warm eyeliner and mascara is the key to a smooth application. So warm it up in your hands or even in the waist band of your pants for a minute or two before applying.
  • Winter hat hair isn’t pretty. So help lift flat roots by applying a dry shampoo after taking off your cold weather head gear.

Also, when do you most appreciate a hot bath or shower? Right: in the winter, to help you enjoy some temporary “ah” time. Do you have all the hot water supply you need? If not, now’s a great time to contact Your 1 Plumber so we can troubleshoot the problem and make things right before they have a chance to go really wrong.
