They’re always there to share a story over milk and freshly baked cookies. They link us to our heritage and family history. And they can even be an affordable childcare option. They are grandparents – and their roles in our lives are invaluable.
National Grandparents Day, observed on the first Sunday after Labor Day, honors the wisdom, experiences, and traditions that grandparents impart on younger generations and encourages us to show our love and appreciation for all they’ve done and continue to do.
So here are just a few ways to make this Grandparents Day special for those near and dear to your heart, and those who may not have families of their own.
Spend Time Together
The gift of time is priceless. So invite the grandparents over or go spend the day with them. Take grandpa fishing or spend the afternoon baking with grandma. Take a stroll down memory lane while you flip through the family photo albums. Or, have the kids make a family tree.
Get Crafty
Compile a CD of their favorite songs from their youth. Ask your children to write a story or make a craft for their grandparents. Make a photo book for them, complete with pictures of them when they were young. Or perhaps you can get crafty together by attending a paint or pottery class.
Offer Help
Pack your toolbox and head over to grandma’s and grandpa’s house for a day of help around the house. The kids can tackle the dishes and dusting while you take care of the leaky faucet, the loose handrail, and those drafty windows.
Give Back
Visit a nursing home and bring a little cheer to those who might need it. Maybe your kids could put on a talent show or concert, or you could deliver small potted flowers or home-made greeting cards. This is a great way to show our children the importance of giving back to our community while honoring those who have paved the way for us.
Do you have older parents or relatives living at home with you? If so, now’s a great time to survey your bathroom to help make sure it’s measures up to today’s safety standards. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the bathroom is the most dangerous room in the house, especially for seniors and small children.
Slips and falls are the leading problems which in turn can and often do result in fractured hips, broken bones, traumatic brain injury.
