Making the Most of National Family Month in Damascus & Montgomery County, MD

They’re the people you love unconditionally. The ones you share the good times with, and those you turn to for support during the bad. They’re your family.
As a nation, we’ve been celebrating this most cherished of institutions during National Family Month – the five weeks between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day – since 1998. The goal of Family Month is to encourage families to spend more quality time together, and to realize the importance of family involvement in shaping the lives of children
So whether you have children of your own or young siblings, nieces or nephews, here are 10 activities you can partake of throughout Family Month and beyond.
- Fly a kite. Take it a step further and make your own..
- Make dinner together, using home-grown or locally sourced ingredients.
- Reach out to extended family and make a family tree.
- Step out of your comfort zone and try something new. Dance lessons, or rock climbing, or perhaps zip-lining.
- Have a campout in the back yard, or even in your living room if you’re not the outdoorsy type.
- Take in a stay-cation, exploring nearby attractions you’ve never made the time to discover.
- Tell stories around a fire-pit while roasting marshmallows.
- Have a tag sale with a lemonade stand, where the proceeds go toward a special family outing.
- Volunteer together. Gather supplies for an animal shelter, or collect food for a food bank. Clean up a local park, or make cards for people in nursing homes and hospitals.
- Make a family time capsule. Include memorable school work, movie ticket stubs, letters to your future selves, and store them all in a cool dark place. Make a plan to “unearth” it in a few years.
At Your 1 Plumber, it is our pleasure to serve the home plumbing needs of thousands of Maryland and Virginia families every year, and we applaud all you do to give your kids every opportunity for a bright, secure, healthy, and productive future.
