What to Look for in a New Garbage Disposal in Lisbon & Howard County, MD

If you purchased a garbage disposal any time within the past 5 years or so, this blog is probably not for you.  That’s because today’s better built units have a shelf life of 10-15 years, on average.

On the other hand, if the clock is starting to wind down on yours, here’s some advice on what to look for before making your purchase:

• Is this your first garbage disposal? you’ll need to check with your town for any pertinent regulations.  If you’re replacing an existing unit, you can probably bypass this step.

• How much horsepower do you need?  Newer models are available in one-third, one-half, and one horsepower models.  The greater the planned usage, the more horsepower you’ll need to get your money’s worth and avoid untimely repairs.

• Does it have a dishwasher connection? If you have a dishwasher, this is a feature you definitely want so the dishwasher can flush food particles through your disposal.

• Are you noise sensitive?  Garbage disposals are typically not the quietest appliance in your home, but some are quieter than others.  Other optional features include corrosion protection shields, overload manual reset buttons, self-service wrenches, and anti-splash baffles.

For a little historical perspective, garbage disposals were invented in 1927 by John W. Hammes in Racine Wisconsin.  An architect by trade, Hammes went on to found the InSinkErator company which sold its first unit in 1940.  In 2009, it was estimated that 50% of all U.S. homes were equipped with garbage disposals compared to only 6% in England.
