How to Stop Shower Scalding in Germantown & Montgomery County
By Wilmer Romero on Feb 8, 2014 in Plumbing
Do you ever find yourself not just planning to take a shower, but planning the exact time?
If so, then chances are you’ve experienced shower scalding before. It’s that sudden surge of hot water – the one that practically makes you jump out of your skin – when somebody else flushes a toilet or turns on another faucet during your shower. And you hate it! Well, who wouldn’t?
So, why does shower scalding happen in the first place? It’s the result of sudden changes in water pressure that can’t be regulated by conventional showerheads. So, for example, if someone has foiled your perfect shower plan and flushes the toilet while you’re in there, cold water rushes to re-fill the toilet. That, in turn, lessens the amount of cold water pressure in the shower while the hot water pressure remains unchanged. Hence, the sudden apparent surge of hot water when, in reality, the real culprit is a sudden lack of cold water.
Either way, scalding is scalding, and it’s no fun at all.
But you can stop planning and sneaking in your showers at odd times by replacing your current showerhead with an anti-scald model. There are two basic types:
- Pressure sensitive
- Pressure and thermostatically sensitive
Pressure sensitive valves “know” when the cold water pressure suddenly decreases, then compensates by immediately reducing the hot water pressure.
Showerheads with built-in thermostat sensitivity also detect when the water temperature reaches and unsafe levels. When that happens, water flow is reduced to a trickle. At that point, you can simply adjust the settings so that the proper temperature and pressure levels will be restored once the line cools down.
And the best part? No new plumbing is required to replace most showerheads with anti-scald replacements.
