Water Leaks Account for 14% of Your Annual Water Usage in Germantown and all of Montgomery County

How concerned are you about conserving water and cutting your annual water bill?

Well, if the answer is anywhere between “somewhat” and “extremely,” this statistic will cause you no less than mild surprise and probably a great deal of concern. Because it’s true: on average, 14% of your annual water usage stems from leaking pipes and fixtures.

So where are the water leaks coming from? Number one on the “hit list” are your toilets, followed closely by faucets and shower heads. Another source of water leaks (which you probably don’t even recognize as a leak) is from older style bathtub spouts that don’t fully shut off while your shower is running.

To find out if the amount of water being wasted during a shower is a problem worth fixing, place one bowl under your bathtub spout during your shower and another under the shower head immediately after turning off the faucets. If the total amount of water collected is more than a cup, you should call your plumber and consider replacing your shower head, bathtub spout, or perhaps even replacing your tub and shower system.

Water can also leak in areas where it’s hard to spot, like behind your refrigerator or from pipes located in crawl spaces and other hard-to-see locations. But, should you notice water under your refrigerator during normal cleaning, you probably have a leak from your ice maker. Also, if you spot any amount of water damage or spotting on your ceilings or walls, you need to call a plumber to find out the source of the leak and have it repaired. Left unattended long enough, structural damage can occur.
