Durable Bathroom Surfaces

We ask a lot of our bathrooms. They need to withstand morning chaos, bath time tantrums, large weekend gatherings, and middle of the night tummy aches – all while being fashionable, functional, and easy to clean.
To accomplish all that, you need your surfaces and finishes to be tough as nails while being gentle on the eyes. Here are five ways to accomplish that dual goal:
- Engineered Stone – Granite and marble might still be the countertop materials of choice, but be prepared to reseal them year after year after year. If you’re thinking of replacing your countertop, give engineered stone a look. It’s non-porous, resists stains, bacteria and mold, and it never needs sealing.
- Glazed Porcelain – Bathroom floors get wet – there’s just no way around that. That means you want flooring material that won’t hold in moisture like wood, laminate, or other porous materials. Enter glazed porcelain tile. Available in countless colors and styles, it can take on whatever spills and splashes your family can dish out.
- Vinyl – This isn’t your grandma’s vinyl. Today’s vinyl can mimic wood, stone, and other natural materials. And it’s much better at resisting moisture than its laminate counterpart. Plus, a single vinyl sheet can cover a small bathroom without even one seam.
- Plywood – Unlike solid wood, which will swell and shrink from humidity, furniture grade plywood – made of pressed layers of birch, cedar, or alder – stands up to moisture and humidity, thus making it a smart choice for bathroom cabinets.
- Tempered Glass – If you prefer shower doors to shower curtains, tempered glass is an obvious choice for safety’s sake. But they’re not spot-resistant despite claims to the contrary. So yes, no matter what type of glass sliders or enclosure you opt for, it’s going to need to be cleaned. But, provided you keep up with it, the task is simple enough.
