Dealing With Runny Toilet Issues

The Rubber Flapper

A flapper is the component connected directly to the flush lever. It is what helps open and shut the flush.

It has two arms connected to it that helps it stay in place while allowing it to go up and down. Over repeated use, the flapper can warp or even break at the hinges, letting water flow down into the bowl.

To check the flapper, flush out the toilet completely. Next, unhook the flapper at the arms then pull it closer to the surface to get a closer look. If you notice discolored line at the bottom of the flapper, it is probably warped and should be immediately replaced. Mineral deposits, cracks in the rubber, or breakage means the flapper is culprit.

If you notice excessive mineral deposits, try cleaning them off and check if the flapper shuts completely now.

If you notice a problem with the flapper itself, they are available at local hardware stores and are really cheap. Changing the flapper is also easy as it only requires unhooking the chains from the present one and hooking the new one in place.
