How to Fix Your Sink Sprayer
By Wilmer Romero on Dec 29, 2016 in Plumbing
If you’re tired of washing dishes with a sink sprayer that only dribbles or fires erratically like a machine gun, you don’t have to put up with such nonsense any longer. Chances are, you also don’t need to be a handy man or plumber to get your sprayer working properly again.
So before hitting the panic button, try these three tried and true self-help tips:
- Clean the aerator on your sink sprayer. The aerator is the cap at the end of the sprayer and a magnet for mineral deposits that can eventually reduce the flow of water. To clean it, unscrew the cap and scrub it with a little soap and an old toothbrush or other small brush. If the mineral deposits prove unusually stubborn, try soaking the aerator in white vinegar overnight to dissolve the buildup. After that, scrub it with soap and water to clear away any remaining grime.
- Clean or replace the diverter valve. This small valve is located inside the faucet. Divert valve problems reveal themselves in the form of pulsating water or when the sprayer keeps trickling water even after you’ve shut off the faucet. To clean or replace it, turn off the water supply to the sink. Next, unscrew the spout and the faucet to access the diverter valve underneath. Remove the valve using pliers and clean the valve using soap and water or vinegar for a heavier buildup. If the valve appears worn out, it needs to be replaced.
- Inspect the sprayer hose for leaks. Pull the sprayer head out until the hose is fully extended. Look for leaks, kinks, or any other signs of damage. Depending on what you find, you can either replace the hose alone or the entire sprayer assembly. Once again, it’s not a difficult job.
