5 Easy and Affordable Home Updates
By Wilmer Romero on Aug 29, 2016 in Home & Lifestyle
Most people undertake a home update project for one of two reasons: increasing its resale value or, more pragmatically, because they simply need a change of scenery, an added convenience, a new safety feature, and so on.
If your goal in additional resale value, chances are you’ll be looking to overhaul one of the big three: kitchen, bathroom, or master bedroom. Chop those off the list, however, and the sky’s the limit in terms of what you can do to liven things up, whatever your reasons might be.
Enhance the entry way
The primary entrance way to your home is sort of like indoor curb appeal: it’s where lasting first impressions are made, good or bad. Looking to change things up? Choose a new coat of white paint to make the area look clean and bright, or choose a more vibrant color to make a statement! Add plantings to the doorway, both inside and out. Everything from topiaries and seasonal flowers, to potted shrubs, and hanging baskets. Don’t forget the seasonal decorating to help create the right mood. A color coordinated wreath also serves to add interest.
Update the kitchen
Updating your kitchen doesn’t have to mean all new cupboards and counters. Simply replace hardware such as handles and nobs to give the kitchen a facelift. Update the sink with a new faucet, sprayer, and soap dispenser. Get creative with lighting that suits you and your home, including recessed lights or under-cabinet task lighting for greater evening ambiance plus more light to aid in meal preparation and clean-up.
Update the bathroom
Replacing your toilet seat and faucet set are two good places to start. Or, how about new, coordinated towel racks – one each for bath and hand towels plus a matching door hook for your robe. You also can cover up outdated or damaged tiles with sticky vinyl floor tiles that are easy to install yourself. Lastly pick a color as a theme and then repaint and re-decorate simultaneously with a decorative vase, picture frames, new candles, towels, etc. You’ll feel like you have a whole new bathroom!
Doctor up your hardwood floors
Once hardwood floors start showing wear and tear, it’s hard to focus on anything else. But now you simply and effectively clean them. Start by eliminating scratches by mixing equal amounts of oil and vinegar together and rubbing them into the scratch. The results will amaze you.
Change up your décor
This can be as simple and easy as changing out wall plates and switches, choosing matching picture frames to create an accent grouping on the wall, purchasing new matching pillows for living or family room furniture, or adding to your wall art collection with something matching of visual and personal interest – perhaps even something of your own creation!
