Gas Water Heater Repair Symptoms

You certainly don’t need any training as a plumber to know that there’s a problem with your water heater. If the water turns cold half way through your shower, or doesn’t turn hot at all, you have a problem. Especially if gangs of people haven’t taken a shower just before you, and there’s no other reason for the diminished supply.
And yet if you really want to help your own cause by tending to potential water heater repair issues early on before things can get any worse, it’s worth taking note of other equally telltale signs of trouble brewing:
- Sediment build-up in the bottom of the tank which, among other things, occupies space and reduces available supply. This problem can be discovered before internal tank damage results by having your water heater professionally inspected once a year.
- Rusty tank. Corrosion is an inevitable outcome with storage tank water heaters assuming you hang onto yours long enough. When the end is near, you’re likely to spot rust on the tank itself or rust-colored hot water.
- Rotten egg smell. This also results from internal tank corrosion caused by a decayed anode rod. The anode rod protrudes from the top of your tank down into the tank itself. Its purpose is to attract mineral sediments to itself to protect your tank’s internal lining. Call a plumber as soon as you detect the rotten egg odor to have your anode rod checked and, most likely, replaced. It’s a very simple and affordable repair.
- Clinking, clanking, banging noises. If your water heater is making more noise than a holiday season parade, it’s basically shouting “fix me now!” The noises can indicate a build-up of sediment, over-heating, or an anode rod that’s broken loose and is banging into the inside walls of the tank.
- Leaking water. If you spot water around the base of your storage tank, it could be leaking from the temperature-pressure relief (TPR) valve. Leaks can also be caused by worn out gaskets, loose connections, or from the tank itself.
