How to Minimize Home Safety Hazards.

blogIf you’re a homeowner, you know that sooner or later, your home will need your attention. Something will leak, break, or just come to the end of its lifespan. But sometimes, a problem arises that is more than just an expensive or frustrating fix – it’s downright dangerous.

Here are seven home hazards you’ll want to tend to right away to keep your home and family safe from harm.

Electric Shock – Routinely inspect electrical cords for signs of wear or damage. Shut off the power when working on an electrical project like replacing or installing a light fixture, and never climb an aluminum ladder when doing electrical work.

Electrical Fires – If you suspect you have old or faulty wiring, get it repaired or replaced right away to reduce your risk of an electrical fire. And be sure your home has working AFCI and GFCI outlets.

Mold – Mold thrives in damp spaces, and can cause serious allergic reactions and even more serious long-term health issues. Fix plumbing leaks and repair water-damaged areas right away to prevent mold from forming. Keep your home’s humidity levels between 30-50%, and use a solution of one part bleach to 9 parts water to remove mold from moisture rich areas inside your house, especially the bathroom.

Asbestos – If your home was built before 1970, chances are you have asbestos. It was commonly used in building materials and has been linked to serious health problems like lung cancer and mesothelioma. If you’re planning on doing any major renovations like removing walls or vaulting a ceiling, contact a certified asbestos consultant for an evaluation.

Lead – If your home was built prior to 1980, there’s a good chance it contains lead paint. If you have young children, it’s important to remove it as it can cause serious health problems over time. You can purchase lead test kits to confirm, but you’ll need to hire a certified lead-safe professional to remove it.

Radon – Radon is a radioactive gas that comes from the breakdown of uranium in soil, water, and rock. It can move up from the ground into your home through cracks and gaps in the foundation. Because it has been linked to lung cancer, mitigating radon in imperative. Have your homes radon levels tested periodically and hire a qualified mitigation company if radon is discovered.

Termites – To prevent termite infestation, periodically inspect wood structures in and around your home for water damage and rot. If you do suspect a termite problem, call in a qualified professional for treatment.
