How to Avoid Room Layout Mistakes

Whether you’re moving into a new home or simply looking to freshen up your living space, there are certain rules one should follow when it comes to furniture placement and room layout. Otherwise, it’s easy to turn even the most open and inviting room into a cluttered looking fiasco. So to ensure that you don’t commit any furniture faux pas, here are 7 things to avoid.
Up Against a Wall – You might be tempted to push sofas and chairs up against walls to maximize space. But pulling furnishings toward the center even just a little can actually create a sense of intimacy and space. Plus, you’ll avoid blocking heat vents and registers.
Overhead Lighting – While overhead lighting is important there are times when you simply want a softer look. Add a standing or table lamp to each sitting area to enhance mood lighting, and consider installing recessed lights on dimmer switches for any time you want to flood the room with light but ease up on the intensity.
Indoor Obstacle Course – Think about how your family and guests walk through a room (or how you want them to); that way, you’ll be more inclined to keep furniture and accessories out of the way of anticipated traffic patterns.
Overcrowding – Don’t feel the need to hang on to every piece of furniture you have. While you might have an emotional attachment to your great aunt’s roll top desk, it doesn’t mean you have to keep it in your already stuffed office or sitting room. Find another spot for it, or remove another piece to avoid overcrowding the space.
Off Balance – Whether it’s furniture or décor, group similar-scaled items together so they create a sense of balance. For example, a small nesting table probably shouldn’t go next to a large overstuffed recliner. Keeping balance in mind will help your rooms look more polished and complete.
Ignoring Comfort- Don’t sacrifice comfort for the sake of style, especially when it comes to furniture. Yes, an all-glass coffee table may look Uber chic, but it’s not exactly something you want to rest your feet on. Choose items that are both functional and comfortable while being stylish to get the maximum pleasure from every room.
Boxed In – Think outside the box when it comes to furniture placement. Try placing your armchairs at an angle instead of next to each other, or position your bed kitty-corner to make a room more visually appealing.
At Your 1 Plumber, our room expertise is pretty well focused on kitchens and bathrooms. But that doesn’t mean we can’t help you enhance another space or two if you suddenly find yourself in a remodeling mode. Take that downstairs bar you always dreamed about for your downstairs “man cave,” and then think how much more functional it would be with its own built-in sink and/or refrigerator. And that’s just one of several example of how Your 1 Plumber can help you transform the look and feel of almost any room in your house into something far beyond the ordinary or expected. Contact us today and let’s explore the possibilities together.
