The Many Practical Uses of Hydrogen Peroxide

Look under any kitchen sink or inside any medicine cabinet and chances are you’ll find a bottle of hydrogen peroxide. After all, it’s one of the most common household disinfectants in the world. But did you also know that little brown bottle can do so much more than just sanitize small cuts and scrapes? In fact, you can use hydrogen peroxide for countless applications all over your home.
Here’s a rundown of just some of the ways you can put it to work for you:
- Skip the middle man and make your baking soda and peroxide toothpaste. Not only will it whiten your teeth, but eradicate unfriendly bacteria as well.
- Use hydrogen peroxide to pretreat tough stains on clothing, bedding, and more. Just be sure to test a small area first, as it can also bleach fabric.
- Pour half a cup of hydrogen peroxide into your toilet bowl. Let sit for 30 minutes, then scrub clean.
- Stop mold and mildew in its tracks by spraying problem areas with hydrogen peroxide.
- Clean and disinfect cutting boards as well as kitchen and bathroom countertops by spraying with hydrogen peroxide, then wiping clean.
- Spray reusable cloth shopping bags to disinfect, clean, and remove food odors.
- Add two cups of hydrogen peroxide to one gallon of water and run the solution through your portable dehumidifier to disinfect and remove any mold or mildew.
- Disinfect dirty rags and cleaning sponges in a bowl of hydrogen peroxide for 30 minutes.
- Remove wax, dirt, and other contaminants from fruit by soaking in hydrogen peroxide for a couple of minutes before rinsing thoroughly.
If you want the full effect of mixing hydrogen peroxide with water, be sure to keep the contents in an opaque spray bottle as light decreases its effectiveness.
Of course, until someone invents a way for hydrogen peroxide to unclog a toilet or repair a leaky faucet, then you’re still also going to need a reliable residential plumber you can turn to, with confidence, any time the need arises. And now you’ve found us: Your 1 Plumber. The only plumber you’ll ever need.
