How to Be Better Organized
By Wilmer Romero on Sep 2, 2015 in Home & Lifestyle
Have you ever been late to work because you couldn’t find your car keys or wallet? Ever incurred a late fee because you lost or accidentally threw out a bill? Or, for that matter, filled your grocery cart with delicious, nutritious food only to eat out because you forgot to defrost the chicken? Well, you’re in good company.
Every day, the average American wastes almost one hour looking for misplaced items which, in turn, results in lost productivity time and wasted dollars. And now for the good news: follow these simple tips and you’ll be well on the way to taking greater command of your life and profiting from the experience:
- Clear the clutter. Let go of things you don’t need and find a place for those you do. If you’re a visual person, place labels in files, baskets, and cubbies to help you organize.
- Automate as much as you can. Set up automatic payment plans on as many bills as you can to eliminate the worry of late fees.
- Set up a household command center. Having one place to keep track of paperwork that needs to be signed, bills that need to be paid, and appointments that need to be made makes life a little more manageable.
- Delegate. If always having to take out the trash, feed the dog, or sort and fold everyone’s laundry frustrates you, assign these tasks to someone else in your family.
- Make a list. If you feel a sense of accomplishment from checking things off, make a list each morning or the night before to help you organize what needs to be done.
- Time block. Don’t get stuck in the multi-tasking maze. Studies show that individuals who focus on one thing at a time actually perform better than those who try to juggle multiple things at once.
- Take care of yourself. You can’t expect to remember much or make wise decisions if you’re stressed, sleep deprived, hungry, or dehydrated. Fuel your body and mind so that you can think clearly and work productively.
You know what else happens when we’re lacking in the organizational skills department? Things that you keep on the back burner have a really hard time moving up on your list of priorities. Take that leaky faucet or clogged drain, for example, the one you keep telling yourself “it can wait ‘til tomorrow.” Sooner or later, that will no longer be true and then you’re likely to have an awfully big mess on your hands.
