Buying a New Water Heater in Waterford & Loudon County
By Wilmer Romero on Jan 26, 2015 in Water Heaters
If you’ve even been thinking about buying a replacement water heater, your timing couldn’t be any better.
Why is that? Because as of April 16, 2015, new federal regulations are going into effect that, over time, will make existing electric and gas storage tank water heaters obsolete. The units that replace them will be larger, even with the same amount of storage capacity. They’ll also be up to 20% more energy efficient.
So far, so good, right?
Well, there is another side of this equation you’ll want to consider very carefully:
- If you wait to replace your water heater until existing models have been sold out, and you have a limited amount of space to work with, you may be forced to purchase a replacement system with less storage capacity.
- What’s more, gas storage tank water heaters are going to be replaced by gas condensing water heaters, and today’s electric storage tank systems will be replaced by electric hybrid heat pump models. These newer, more energy efficient systems will be up to double the cost of conventional gas and electric storage tank models.
These changes are being mandated by the National Appliance Energy Conservation Act (NAECA), which further stipulates that as of 4/16/15, conventional gas and electric storage tank water heaters can no longer be manufactured in the US. Left over stock can still be sold and installed, but once they’re gone, they’re gone.
So, as we stated at the top, if your water heater is getting up there in years and/or if you’ve been thinking about replacing it for any other reason, now’s the perfect time to buy a replacement system like the one you have now, and save yourself a bunch of money in the process.
