How to Prevent Mold from Polluting Your Indoor Air in Alexandria City, VA
By Wilmer Romero on May 28, 2014 in Home & Lifestyle
The issue of indoor air quality is so vital to our nation’s health, that National Clean Air Month is now observed every year between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Which means that observances all across the country are going on as this blog is being published.
There are two primary ways you improve the quality of the air inside your home: by getting rid of pollutants already there and by preventing future build-ups.
One of the best prevention measures of all is keep your home mold and mildew free, and here are several ways to go about that:
- Use an exhaust fan in the kitchen when cooking on the stove, especially if you’re boiling water
- But not just any exhaust fan will do, since most older models simply recycle the steam back into your home. If that’s the kind you have, look into replacing it with one that removes moisture from your home.
- Same goes for your bathroom – exhaust fans are essential there, especially if your bathroom doesn’t have windows.
- Keep your bathroom exhaust fan running for at least a couple of minutes after you leave the bathroom.
- If you have a bathroom window, open it even just a little after showering.
- Open your shower curtains as wide as possible after showering to prevent mold from collecting in the creases.
- Spread your towels and wash cloths out flat to dry.
- Don’t put wet towels or any other wet clothes in your laundry basket unless you’re planning to wash them immediately.
- Wipe down your shower walls, especially if made with tiles and grout, after each shower.
There’s plenty more you can do to keep your home mold and mildew free, like not letting your indoor humidity climb above 60%, fixing water leaks as soon as you spot them, checking for hidden water leaks, and so on.
The point is, prevention absolutely is the best medicine, especially when you consider the negative health effects that mold and mildew can bring about, including problems with allergies, asthma, and other upper respiratory ailments.
