Spring Plumbing Tips for Home Owners in Montgomery County
By Wilmer Romero on May 13, 2013 in Plumbing
Spring and summer bring tons of fun and relaxation, but they also can spring forth plumbing problems that have been brewing since the cold weather first hit last fall.
Here are a few tips to help you keep ahead of the curve and conserve water at the same time.
Check for leaks and cracked or broken pipes. Let’s say, for example, that you did not shut off the water supply to your outdoor faucets last fall. While that’s a recipe for cracking and leaking, there’s no way you’d notice that problem until now. And while a little outdoor leaking isn’t such a big deal (though it bears keeping an eye on), a cracked hose bib or connecting pipe could cause an indoor water leak, as well. The next time you turn on an outdoor faucet, leave it running than the go inside to make sure water isn’t leaking.
Clean up. While you’re going about your typical spring cleaning tasks, add a few more items to the list. For example, clear all gutters and downspouts of leaves and gunk that may be preventing water from draining properly. If your water heater is at least 3 years old and you’ve never drained the tank, grab a hose, connect it to the storage tank, and drain the other end in a water pail, outdoors, or in a floor drain. In the process, you’ll also be draining built-up sediment that, over time, can eat away at the inside of your tank and eventually cause a water leak and damage to the tank itself.
Conserve water this summer. Keep your water consumption down this summer and save some extra money in the process. Check your garden hose and sprinkler system for leaks to prevent hundreds of gallons of wasted water. Watering your garden and lawn before 8 am consumes less water than a mid-day application in the scorching sun. Also, lay some mulch around plants and bushes to help hold water in the soil.
