Clogged Sewer Prevention in Germantown and Tuscarora
By Wilmer Romero on Apr 23, 2013 in Sewers & Drains
The sewer lines in your home are responsible for draining any and all used water away from your home. Should a stoppage occur, that used water will begin to linger in your pipes and eventually back up into your home, causing a definite plumbing emergency. Fortunately though, it doesn’t take a professional to spot the early signs of a clogged sewer.
- Pay close attention to your toilets. The toilet is the first place a sewer problem will present itself. Your toilet is connected to the largest drain line in your home, and you’ll know that some kind of problem is brewing when:
- You flush the toilet and water backs up into the tub or shower drain.
- The water does not refill in the bowl to the same level as before.
- More than one toilet acts strangely at the same time.
- Observe your yard for more than just stray weeds. If there is a leaking or broken sewer line on your property, the ground may appear mushy and soft in specific areas. If the leak is more advanced, puddles may been forming. Be sure to look for these signs when the weather has been dry for at least a few days.
- Use your nose and ears, as well. Foul odors in your bathroom, kitchen, or basement/crawlspace that regular cleaning can’t get rid of, or bubbling or gurgling toilets are also telling you something’s up; or, rather, that something isn’t going down the way it should be.
- Monitor your plumbing fixtures for any odd behavior. Let’s say, for example, that your tub starts to back up while your washing machine drains. Or your toilet bubbles when you’re running water in your sink. Definitely not normal behavior, and definitely time to think about calling a professional plumber for assistance.
