How to Conserve Water at Home in Germantown

The U.S. has the highest per capita water use on the planet.  And yet, we’re years behind other countries, especially Australia and those in Europe, in energy and water conservation.

So here are some simple and effective water saving tips from the green plumbing professionals at Your 1 Plumber:md

  • Take care of leaky faucets and pipes as soon as you notice them.  A leaky faucet alone can waste up to 100 gallons of water every week.
  • Replace your old shower heads and faucets with new, water saving fixtures.
  • Install faucet aerators.  These reduce the amount of water being used but add air bubbles to keep the flow lively. The result:  two gallons of water saved per minute.
  • Turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth.
  • Use your water meter to check for hidden water leaks The best way to do that is to check the water meter before and after a two-hour hiatus in using any water in your house.  If the meter has advanced, you have leak that’s only going to get worse if not immediately addressed.  And that means not just more water being wasted but possible structural damage to your home.
  • Wash fruits and vegetables in a bowl, and fill you sink to wash and rinse dishes, instead of running the water.
  • Use your toilet for waste disposal only.  Older model toilets use anywhere from 3 to 7 gallons of water per flush.  So every time you use that toilet as an ashtray or for any reason other than its intended purpose, that’s how much water you’re wasting.

Here’s another way to gauge how reduced toilet flushing can benefit us all.  It’s estimated that if each household flushed a 3-7 gallon toilet just one less time per day, the United Sates would save enough water to fill a lake – one mile long by one mile wide, and four feet deep – every single day.

At Your 1 Plumber, we have numerous ways to help you conserve water, including replacing your water guzzling toilet with a low-flush or dual-flush model.  For more information, why not contact us today.
