How to Plunge Your Kitchen Sink

Kitchen sinks blog. Which is no more profound than saying architects design buildings or street cleaners clean streets. It’s just what they do.

So that begs the question: if your kitchen sink were to clog up today, what exactly would you do go break it up? Try to reach down and yank out the culprit? Boil some water and pour it down the drain? Both good choices, among others. But the one move that most often delivers the desired end result on your first try is using a kitchen plunger.

Not a flanged toilet plunger, but a short-handled, flat-bottom plunger specifically designed for sinks and tub drains. For your information, they also come in short- and long-handled models, the former being ideal for a kitchen sink while the latter is usually the better choice for plunging a shower or tub drain.

Okay, so now that you have the right plunger in hand, here’s what to do next:

  • Form a tight seal around the drain with your plunger – sink plungers are designed for that very purpose
  • Gently compress the plunger and then use force to pull it back up. That’s best way to pull the clogging item up rather than pushing it further down the drain.

If the clog still isn’t removed after several repeated plunges, next try mixing about 1/3 cup each of baking soda and distilled white vinegar. Pour that combination down the drain and then put the lid on your drain so the fizzing action can achieve maximum gain. About 30 minutes later, pour boiling hot water down the drain. Still clogged? Resume plunging for a few more minutes, and if your drain is STILL clogged, it’s time to contact the professional plumbing crew at Your 1 Plumber.
