Simple & Affordable Home Decorating Tips

Perhaps you’ve tried all the latest decorating ideas, painted, rearranged, and even acquired new pieces but – somehow, some way – the room still doesn’t look right.  And not the way you imagined it would. Well, the solution could be a lot simpler than you think, and here are just a few possibilities:

Poor lighting: A dark room, or even a dark corner can change the way a room feels and even how your carefully chosen colors look. Darkened areas can be offset with a lamp, by shading the light from a window with curtains, or by aiming movable lights to fill a corner.

Wall hugging: A common mistake when redecorating a room is to move all the furniture up against the walls to try and make the room look bigger. The problem is that this often creates an awkward flow of space for guests who want to face each other and not look across an empty room. Likewise, accent pieces, books, and other decorations get lost in the linear flow of the wall hug. Bring those pieces out and let them shine!

Art height: Perhaps you hung one or more pieces of art to line up with your eye level when standing.  Only problem is, awkward gaps now appear above or below the art.  Instead, try hanging each piece so the bottom edge is 50 inches above floor level.

No touch of you: Maybe all your “new look” room needs is a touch of you to suddenly feel right.  Try adding your favorite book to a table, your grandmother’s tea cup to the windowsill as a planter, or a saying from your favorite story as artwork.

Too much of one color: Having an accent wall, bold pops of color in a pillow or rug, or even “going for it” with a piece of décor can make a bold and positive statement. But you can go overboard if the color is everywhere! Tone it back by adding fabrics that have both the accent and a neutral color.
